The chapel was destroyed about 1750 and the last vestiges removed about 1860. A probable 15th century effigy of St Anthony which is in Merther church was found at the site. Much worked stone and a perfect granite stoup with a face carved on its front have also been found. There are differences of opinion of the location of the holy well. |

(1) A short distance east of Merther church (SW 84 SE 7) is a field called `St Coan', the site of the chapel and well of St. Cohan. The chapel was destroyed about 1750 (a) and the last vestiges removed about 1860 (2). A probable 15th century (2) effigy of St Anthony which is in Merther church (3) (4) was found at the site. The saint is represented with flowing hair and beard standing with a pig at his feet. Much worked stone and a perfect granite stoup with a face carved on its front have also been found. Henderson identifies the holy well as a spring which still issues near the site (well shown at SW 86614486 on OS 1:10 000 1973) but the Quiller Couches site it "in a secluded nook" in a field south of the church, separated from the field by a high hedge forming an enclosure (probably the well shown at SW 86304459). They record that water was still brought from there for baptisms. (5)
