More information : (SW 85483205) 'Place' on site of (NAT) Priory Cell (NR) (1)
The site of a cell of Augustinian canons for a prior and one canon, dependent on Plympton Priory, founded before 1288 and dissolved 1538.
The cell building was probably not considerable and appears to have been largely removed at the Reformation to provide building material for St. Mawes Castle (SW 83 SW 14). An Elizabethan mansion appears to have been built on the site, 'Mr Davies' House' being shown on a map of 1597. The house has since been enlarged and altered mainly in the 19th century, producing the present 'Place House'. A room with massive, probably 15th century, roughly carved beams at the back of the house is said to have been the refectory. It adjoins the church (SW 83 SE3) and communicates by a door and short flight of steps with the nave, probably the original arrangement. (See SW 83 SE 5 for sea mill). (2-4)
Place manor was remodelled in 1851 in the style of a French chateau and is not outstanding.
Two re-used Tudor type doorways are incorporated in the building and the present kitchen has finely carved ceiling beams. (5)
The site of a culverhouse at Place listed. (6) |
