More information : (SD 54103351) Broughton Tower (NR) (site of) (NAT) Moat (NR). (1) Broughton Tower was built as a fortified manor house by one of the Singletons, a family mentioned in 1471. In the 16th century, the Tower was a strongly built house surrounded by a moat. The last remains were taken down in 1800. (2-3) There are no surfaces indications of the Tower other than a slight rise at the published site. Only the north west side of the moat is well defined, the remainder is mutilated and partly filled in, but can still be traced. (4) Published survey (25") revised. (5) Condition unchanged. (6)
The site was mapped with reference to historic aerial photography and lidar imagery as part of the Lancashire NMP. Medieval earthworks relating to the moat and platforms of unknown function were identified on historic vertical aerial photography (7). The moat was filled in during the 1930s as part of water works being carried out at the site (8). It should therefore be noted that the earthworks mapped as part of this project represent the state of the moat after this event and not in its orginal form. A rectilinear enclosure that likely represent another moated site was also mapped as part of the project on the other side of Moss Leach Brook. These features are partially extant on the latest 2013 aerial photography (9). |
