The Portreath branch of the Hayle Railway was opened in 1838 for the carrying of copper ore and coal between the harbour (see SW 64 NE 7) and the main line at Carn Brea Yard. It was closed in 1936. At Portreath there was a counterbalanced, rope-worked incline (SW 65754469 - SW 65704527) down to the harbour. It had a double track, the power being provided by a stationary locomotive used as the winding engine. All that now remains is a deep cut in the cliff that begins with a low-slung granite embankment, and at the summit a house named 'Incline Cottage'. Housing development threatens the surviving features at the summit. (3-6)
