More information : SD 52982989 Site of St Mary Magdalen's Hospital (NR) SD 52932990 Site of St Mary Magdalen's Church (NR) (1) The precise foundation date of St Mary Magdalen's Hospital for lepers is unknown. First mentioned in letters of protection granted by Henry II after 1177, it had apparently fallen into disuse by 1465. A free chapel attached to the Hospital was also allowed to decay, and it was dissolved in 1548 after being recorded as defaced and open at both ends in 1546. The Hospital is supposed to have been sited near the present St Walburge's Church (SD 52952988). A stone coffin and some skeletons were found when the Church was being built and similar discoveries were made in the cutting of the Lancaster Railway. Many other remains of the Hospital have been dug up on the Maudland Estate, and five skeletons and other human bones were found in 1836 by workmen making new streets there. (Maudland Bank SD 532299). (2-3) No further siting evidence. (4)
