Summary : Medieval cross situated on a rock on the northeast side of St Michaels Mount. It comprises a lantern head 1 metre high, mounted on a tapering octagonal chamfered shaft 2.3 metres high, and 0.3 metres square at the base. The `steeple' top has been restored with modern cement and floral designs have been applied to the top of the shaft. |
More information : [SW 5149 2988] Stone Cross [O.E.] (1) An ancient stone cross situated 2 1/2 chains NE of the mansion (2) 'A Gothic cross of 14th or 15th century date with niches containing figures and a steeple shaped top. It stands on a rock on the NE of the island and came from Sinns Redruth. 'Scheduled Ancient Monument' (SW 64 SE 12) (3) A lantern head as described by the Ministry of Works is on a tapering octagonal chamfered shaft 2.3m high, and 0.3m square at the base. The head is 1.0m high. The 'steeple' top has been restored with a modern cement and floral designs applied to the top of the shaft. See AO/60/299/3 from the west. The cross is correctly positioned on OS 25". (4)
