More information : [SW 4297 3368] Lanyon Quoit [NR] (1)
Lanyon Quoit, Madron parish. 'At the present day this site consists of a long barrow 90 ft. by 40 ft. orientated north-south with a chamber at the north end, and at the south end some more large stones which may be the remains of one or more cists. The north chamber consists of three orthostats supporting a capstone 19 ft. long but their present arrangement is not original: the chamber collapsed in 1815 and was re-erected in 1824'. [See AO/376/7] (2)
Lanyn Quoit is scheduled as an ancient monument. (3)
Lanyon Quoit is as described by Daniel. The barrow, which is covered by grass and bracken, is very mutilated and its outline difficult to determine, due to the uneven nature of the ground. Ground photograph AO 60/296/3 - from the west. A 25" inch survey has been made. (4)
Although the measurements may be inaccurate, Borlase and Lukis record one or more cists which probably formed part of the chambered tomb. Borlase notes a ring of stones containing bones and charcoal, destroyed c 1868, which was 21 ft to the SW of the Quoit (a). Lukis says there was a cist 50 ft to the SE (b). Blight records a mound and retaining circle, probably the same one as Borlase, but with different details (c). In the Penwith Survey (d) all have been treated as three separate barrows (Madron 2, 3, 4, 5). None can now be identified on the ground. Resurveyed at 1:2500. (5a-d)
Lanyon Quoit is on land owned by the National Trust. (6) |
