More information : [SW4024 2818] Hut Barrow (Tumulus) [OE] (1) Barrow with Kistvaen standing in comparatively low ground in the corner of a field, and nearly in a direct line south from the Chapel Uny case [Corn. 73 NE 39] from which it is about 1/4 mile distant. "The diameter...is about 15 ft. It is of conical form, though some of the upper part has been removed, or has fallen away. At present it measures in height about 9 ft. The base....consists of a number of large blocks of granite, averaging 3 ft. in height and converging towards the centre. On the south side, the mound has been cut down from the summit to the floor of the Kistvaen which is 2 ft. above the level of the adjoining ground. The chamber thus exposed to view runs exactly N. and S..... It is 6' 1" in length by 4' 3" in breadth at the bottom; owing, however, to the side supporters inclining inwards perhaps from...pressure...it measures only 3' 2" at the top. From the present floor to the covering stones, the height is 3' 3"..... It is not known when the barrow was opened....." See AO/59/252/3,4 (2) Round chambered-barrow at Brane has "been opened longer than any records". (3) Small chamber barrow at Brane. "Its barrow is tiny but....it remains almost to its original height since it is surrounded by a retaining wall of large upright slabs. It may possibly be considered a very small gallery, for one end is open and may have been so originally". Listed under 'Scillonian Entrance Graves'.(4) "Brane Nat.Grid. 402282 Marked as 'Tumulus'. Also known as 'Chapel Enny Barrow'. A fine example with a kerb of large slabs around the barrow".(5) Sancreed, Brane chambered barrow Scheduled Ancient Monument.(6) The barrow is as described by Borlase and in much the same condition as when he saw it. It is very conical in shape with a height of 2.3m. the only mutilation is on the south when the side of the barrow has been removed to expose the chamber. Ground photographs AO/60/368/8 (Chamber from the south) and AO/60/369/1 (Barrow from the N.W.) A 25" survey has been made.(7) (SW 40132818) Hut Barrow (NR) (8) Listed.(9) Scheduled under Barrows.(10) SW40232828. The gorse-covered barrow is very well preserved and its appearance matches the Borlase drawing almost exactly. It stands in isolation in a large arable field now that an adjacent field hedge has been demolished. This field is regularly cultivated and the plough is gradually cutting away the earth around the mound - so much so that the facing slabs are being undermined and some are in danger of collapse. A small section of coursed stone facing on the east side has recently tumbled down. Fairly urgent action is required to arrest any possible further damage to this scheduled site. Published 1/2500 survey correct.(11)
