Monument Number 421703

Hob Uid: 421703
Location :
Cornwall
St. Just
Grid Ref : SW3900032610
Summary : Four recumbent stone slabs, and a possible fifth have been interpreted as a possible stone alignment.
More information : [Centred at SW 3901 3261] Stones [NR] (1)

Four holed stones about 1/4 mile east of the Logan Stones near
Carn Vres. Each has a hole perforated through its centre of about
6" in diameter. The edges of the holes are rounded ... They lie
in a straight line nearly E. and W. There is a space of about
12' between the two westernmost 33' between the two centre stones
and 9' between the two eastern ..." (2)

Holed stones near Tregaseal - [Description and detailed
measurements given. The writer adds:] "About 100 yds. N. of these
I recently discovered a fifth, broken in two, but the parts lying
together. It is smaller ... measuring only 2' 7" by 1' 8" with
a hole about 3" diameter ..." (3)

Scheduled under Megalithic Monuments. (4)

The four large slabs, all recumbent, extend in an irregular line
across moorland. From west to east they are lettered A-D. A, B and
D (for photo of which see AO/60/378/5 from E) are roughly similar
with hourglass perforations: at the centre of each slab the hole
is 3" to 4" in diameter, but at the faces the perforation widens
to 6" to 8". Only half of stone C survives, the fracture being
across the hole.
19.0 m. to the N.W. of 'A' is the fifth stone 'E'. It is unlike the
others, being an upright block of rectangular section. (See
AO/60/378/4 from N.W.). It is as described and measured by Blight,
fractured across the hole, which is of hour glass type but slightly
smaller than those in the other stones. It is rather doubtful if
it is 'in situ' since it stands on, or in, a bank of upcast, and
is not frimly fixed. The position also differs from that described
by Blight. The group of stones is centred at SW 3900 3261. (5)

No change, surveyed at 1/2500. (6)

Five holed stones. (7)
