Summary : A cross base set into a hedge bank on the east side of Standish Wood Lane. The cross forms one of a group of four medieval crosses which functioned as waymarkers along the medieval route from Wigan to Chorley. The cross base is carved from a single block of local gritstone. There are grooves cut into the top from the socket hole to the edge of the stone on the east and west sides. There is also an OS benchmark cut into the top surface of the block on the south side. |
More information : Cross [G.T.]. [SD 56260877] (1) Standish Wood Lane Cross. The pedestal of this cross is shown in Standish Wood Lane on eastern boundary of Standish Park and one mile due south from Standish Church. (2) An ancient cross shaft springing from a tier of steps (3) Ref.T.C.3. There is no tier of steps visible below the remains of this cross, although they may be below the ground and this covered by bushes etc. The remains of the cross consists of a stone base measuring 0.8m by 0.7m by 0.6m deep with socket hole measuring 0.3m by 0.2m by 0.3m deep with a cutting on W. side. There is a small rectangular incision on each side of the socket hole and a bench mark has been cut on the upper face of the base. The base is situated on east side of Standish Wood Lane.
