Coldbridge Farm

Hob Uid: 417684
Location :
Kent
Maidstone
Boughton Malherbe
Grid Ref : TQ8852047880
Summary : An 18th/19th century farmhouse incorporating remains of a medieval fortified manor house. Licences to crenellate were granted in 1314 and 1363 and the house was probably demolished circa 1559-78. The moat, a fishpond, and what appears to be a large paddock, survive as earthworks.
More information : [TQ 8852 4788] Coldbridge Farm on site of (NAT) Castle (NR) (1)

Colebridge Castle is mentioned in 1314 and 1363 when licences to crenellate were granted. There is a tradition that hewn stone and other materials from Colebridge Castle were used to build Boughton Place (TQ 84 NE 3 - built 1559-78) and it seems probable that the castle was demolished about this date. (A history of the manor is given) There are the remains of extensive moats. The inner moat is well-defined but it is apparent that the outer moat extended sufficiently to form a second defence on all sides (See AO/61/330/2) (2-3)

Coldbridge Castle was evidently a fortified manor house. Some early stone-work survives in the lower courses of the present
18-19th century farmhouse and covered foundations are said to exist in the garden to the south. The earthworks comprise a homestead moat and various additional features, including a fishpond and what appears to be an extensive paddock to the SSW. There is no evidence that the `Outer Moat' ever existed on the S. and E. sides and it was probably only a stream diversion and boundary bank on the lower side of the site. Published 25" survey revised.(4)
