Summary : St Mary's Hospital, or the New Work, Strood, was founded in 1192-3 by Gilbert de Glanville. The monks of Rochester disputed its independence and gained permission in 1330 for the master to be a monk with 4 monks under him. This arrangement lasted until 1402 when the monks were displaced because of laxity. The hospital was surrendered in 1539. Excavations in 1967 recovered the plan of the chapel and the North end of the hall at right angles to the West of it. The chapel appears to have collapsed in the late 14th or early 15th century and was rebuilt, the hall being slightly remodelled. |
More information : TQ737693. The 13th century plan of Newark Hospital, was recovered during excavations by A.C.Harrison for the Kent Archaeological Society and the M.P.B.W. (1) The site at TQ 7372 6927 has now been redeveloped with shops and an inn, and nothing of the Hospital remains to be seen. Surveyed at 1/2500. (2) Additional bibliography. (3-5)
