More information : HOLY WELL at HEYSHAM called the CHURCH WELL. (1) The well outside the churchyard gate at HEYSHAM had, within living recollection, an arched head full of long slender hart's tongued ferns, hanging down to the water, but the walling in the bank above gave way and fell in, and the carved stones have disappeared. (2) The legend that the well outside the churchyard gate was a holy well is without foundation. At present it is used as a drain from my greenhouse.(a) [SD 41086159] The existing well outside the churchyard gate although disused, is modern. It is circular in shape and constructed of stone, and is set in the wall of the rectory garden. There are two steps leading up to it from street level. Although no definite evidence was discovered it would appear that this well replaced that mentioned in Auth.1-2 (3)
