LANCASTER BLACKFRIARS

DESCRIPTION + /

Dominican friary founded in 1260, dissolved in 1539. Traces of monastic cells were discovered in Sulyard Street in the 19th century, and the course of the precinct wall is known. A number of human remains have also been found in the vicinity. Two trenches excavated in Sulyard Street and Dalton square in 1981 found the Mediaeval deposits to be destroyed, broken encaustic tiles and bones appearing as residual material in the later deposits. Another trench excavated in Dalton Square in 1994 found in situ wall footings thought to be associated with the cloister garth.
