More information : (TQ 41330976) St James's Hospital (NR) (Remains of) (1)
St James's Hospital, similar to an almshouse, founded possibly after 1100 and dissolved c1540. Dependent on Lewes Priory. The 14thc hospital chapel still exists and is converted to a cottage, but the great infirmary hall has disappeared. Internal dimensions of chapel 34 x 15 feet. Walls flint-faced and to the N and S retain mid-14thc windows. The infirmary hall (110ft x 36ft) extended W of the chapel to the end of St James's Lane. There was a tenement called the Gatehouse, perhaps part of the hospital, in St James's Lane which had already fallen down at the beginning of the 17thc. On the N side of and near the chapel there seems to have been the foundations of a large building, perhaps the cells or compartments of a large building, perhaps the cells or compartments of the brothers and sisters. This was 18 ft E-W and 40ft long, its E side 34ft. W of the E end of the chancel. The foundations of a large buttress were dug up at some date, and this appears to have been the NW extremity of the building, and probably belonged to the N aisle of the chapel. It stands at 115ft W of what is now the W end of the hospital. (4)
Only the chapel, now converted into a cottage, remains. It is at TQ 41300975 and is occupied. (5) Only the chapel remains, at TQ 41300975. Of this, the only original fabric is the N and S walls with two windows in the N side. The building has lately been restored and converted into a school storehouse. Published 1:2500 survey correct.
