Summary : First century Roman building excavated in 1973 within the demolished St. Mildred's Church in Bread Street. A range of rooms, probably the eastern part of a house was revealed. Parts of earlier buildings were also identified.
More information : (TQ 32288100) The remains of a Roman masonry building of
1st century AD, excavated in 1973 within the demolished Wren church
of St. Mildred in Bread Street. A range of rooms, probably the
eastern part of a house was revealed. The only floors to survive
were of opus signinum. Slots and gullies at a lower level may
represent timber buildings. Pottery including samian, a coin of
Vespasian and pointed wall plaster were among the finds.
