More information : (TQ 33608083) W9 Coopers Row, Barber and Co's warehouse, 1864 and 1961-2 In the rebuilding of the warehouses in 1864, a stretch of wall, 110 ft. long and standing to a height of 35 ft. above ancient ground level, was uncovered and preserved in the new building. This in turn was demolished in 1961, but the wall has been preserved and made more accessible. The upper part is mediaeval, and contains round-headed embrasures, possibly of the twelfth century. (See Plates 40,44.) The triple course of bricks on the internal face, corresponding with the external plinth, was 6in. below the basement floor level of the 1864 warehouse, but was revealed during rebuilding in 1962 (Pl. 42). Mr. F. Cottrill noted in 1936 that somewhere in this stretch of wall there is a change of construction. Near the southern end there are three courses of ragstone between the levelling course and the first bonding-course, and 86 ft. further north there are four.
