Summary : The building was begun in 1664 by John Webb as the first range of a projected royal palace for King Charles II. This was left unfinished and boarded up until the granting of the site for the creation of the Royal Naval Hospital in 1694. The early building is of two main storeys with three-storey end pavilions. A scupture in the east and north pediments comprises the Royal Stuart arms and reclining figures of Fortitude and Dominion of the Sea supported by Mars and Fame. A further block to the west was added by Wren in 1696-1700. This was altered between 1712-1718 and 1769 to match Webb's original building. Further alterations were undertaken by John Yenn in 1811-14. The building is now in use as a college. |
