More information : "In 1822, an urn filled with bones and ashes was found in a small barrow standing on the outside, but near the earthworks of the entrenchment" (ie Whitehawk Camp, assumed by Horsfield to be Roman) "Several Roman coins were picked up at the same time". (1) Tumuli existed at one time outside Whitehawk Camp, but were levelled in 1822 to improve the race course. (2) No further information. (3) Coin of Probus (276-282) found on Whitehawk Hill before 1935. Present whereabouts not stated. (4) A bronze coin of Marcus Aurelius (161-180) was found by Rev J H Boothroyd, just outside Whitehawk Camp (TQ 330048). (5)
"Numerous Roman urns and coins have been taken from the tumuli, which, till within a very few years since, were seen just without the intrenchment [ie Whitehawk causewayed enclosure, TQ 30 SW 1, believed by Horsfield to have been Roman]. They have been levelled off to improve the racecourse." (6)
A decorated round object of flint or chert was apparently found "deposited with ashes in an urn of rude fabrication found in a broken state." Considered by Way to be of possible Saxon date, Welch suggests it "is in fact more modern." [See TQ 30 NW 64, which probably refers to the same object] (7-8) |
