Summary : Site of a Roman villa discovered in c1772 and excavated in the 19th and 20th centuries dating from 1st to the 4th century AD with tesselated pavements and a hypocaust. Surface finds of brick and tile, cropmarks also visible.
More information : [TQ 23165365] ROMAN VILLA [G.S.] (Site of) (1) A Roman villa on Walton Heath was first discovered c.1772 and as subsequently excavated in 1856, 1882, and 1948. Tesselated pavements, remains of a hypocaust, and probable corridor were found. The villa may have been enclosed by a ditch. Pottery, including Claudian, dates the site from mid 1st to 4th century. [O.S. siting confirmed. For field systems possibly associated with the villa see TQ 25 SW 3] (2-6) There are no surveyable remains of the Roman villa.
