Kingston Castle, supposedly associated with the Saxon palace [TQ 16 NE 13], was captured by Henry III in 1264. (a) Subsequently, it is said to have belonged to the Nevills, Earls of Warwick 15th c. It possibly stood near the corner of Heathen [Eden?] Street, but this siting is traditional. (2-3)
The foundations remain under several houses on the west side of Eden Street. (4)
There are now no remains of this castle. The site is occupied by modern buildings and recent development to the south has revealed no early foundations, although modern foundations have been sunk 20ft below ground level. (5) |
