Summary : St Peter's Church is a 12th century building with later additions. The chancel added in the 13th century, the West tower in the 15th century and the South porch in the 16th century. The vestry was built, and the church restored, in 1886.There is evidence to suggest that Woking had a minster in the Middle and Late Saxon period. In 690, Medeshamstede monastery (Peterborough) had dependencies at Bermondsey and Woking. A papal privilege of 708-15 refers to Woking minster and in 775-85 Woking church had 20 hides confirmed to it by Offa. There is reasonable evidence that the minster survived and could be identified with the church on the Domesday royal manor. |
