More information : Excavations in advance of sand quarrying in 1961 revealed the remains of a circular structure 20ft in diameter with a central post-hole and 2 ash pits. A cooking area with 4 hearths, a shallow clay-lined pit, a buried cairn and the remains of 2 small cultivated plots were also noted.
Excavations sited at TQ 0555 4840 on 1:2500.
During excavations between 1962-3 a trackway, 4ft wide and composed of occupation debris and intermittently edged with ironstone, was traced for over 114ft. Other structures located included a post hole cluster, another low cairn of ironstone and a rectangular working area incorporating 2 small pits, one containing potsherds and the other a complete storage pot. Grain from this area was carbon dated to 510 BC + or - 110. Evidence of copper working was also noted.
Excavations continued in 1965/66 on an area some 100 feet to
the south, where the L.B.A. farmstead was found to overlay a
Mesolithic dwelling site, including a hearth.(1-3)
TQ 05474840. I.A. 'A' sherds, a clay loom-weight & a sandstone
rubber found when an 18th. C. mound was excavated.(4)
The L.B.A. farmstead excavated in 1961-63 has now been destroyed
by sand quarrying operations.
Excavations continue on the site to the south which is centred
at 'B' TQ 05544830.
The Mesolithic hearth is centred at TQ 05524831 at 'C'.
(Surveyed at 1/2500).
On display in Guildford Museum, from Weston Wood, is a L.B.A.
quern Acc.No.A.S.135, also a representative selection of the
smaller finds.(5)
