Arundel Friary

Hob Uid: 392732
Location :
West Sussex
Arun
Arundel
Grid Ref : TQ0197007080
Summary : Dominican Friary founded pre -1253 and dissolved in 1538. Formerly thought to have stood on the North side of Maltravers Street, a review of documentary sources, the surviving works and excavations have demonstrated that the buildings known as the Maison Dieu are in fact the south range of the friary.
More information : (TQ 01570704(1)) Dominican priory founded at Arundel before 1253, dissolved 1538, stood on the north side of Maltravers Street, about half way down. Nothing now remains of it. (1-3)

No further information: no trace on ground. (4)

There is plenty of documentary evidence to show that the commonly believed view that old buildings by the bridge are the remains of the Maison Dieu (TQ00NW103) are in fact remains of the friary:

The south, west range and chapel are shown by the river in two 18th century etchings.

a borough account book of 1619-20 records the building of a jetty at the north side of the bridge `towards the fryers'.

An inquest of 1543 into a body washed ashore at Fryers in the Borough,

and there is mention of a boathouse beside the cloister of the Friars Preachers in the late 14th account roll at arundel Castle.

Grimm's etching of the range in 1780 apears to show carrels, or study roms, on the upper floor, a feature of the south range of a Dominican Friary. [ NGR altered to TQ01970708]. (5)
