Summary : The Norman church of St Botolph consisted of a nave and chancel, the latter replaced in the 13th or 14th centuries. A West tower and South porch were added in the 15th century, and the chancel was first shortened and then restored to its original size, in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1968 the thatched roof caught fire and the roof was destroyed, but the remaining walls are in a good state of preservation.Excavations in 1977 revealed a large fragment of a 9th or 10th century cross shaft incorporated in the Norman fabric, and pre-Norman graves and a timber building on a different alignment. This may be strong confirmatory evidence that Iken is the location of St Botolph's monastery of Icanhoe (TM45NW10). Romano-British pottery and Middle Saxon occupation was also found. |
