More information : Hawker's Hall [GT] (Site of) Moat [GT] Moat [GT] (1)
Mentioned as a Saxon Manor, held by the Bygod family after the conquest. (2)
A ringwork with remains of an outer defensive ditch (?former bailey). It has been mutilated on the the NW corner by quarrying and recent drainage, apart from this the site is in good condition. There are two entrances one to the N the other to the S. at the northern entrance are the remains of two tower or turret mounds. Published survey 1/2500 revised.
This has the appearance of being a very early work, probably the site of a timber hall, and Blomefields Saxon classification might well be correct. (3) |
