Summary : Anglo Saxon pits and a hearth with associated finds. Iron Age and Romano-British sherds were found in the top soil. Probably related to the Anglo-Saxon occupation over the Roman Villa TM 22 NW 3. The features date to the Early Anglo-Saxon period. |
More information : TM 22302916. Anglo/Saxon finds excavated from two pits in 1956-7. The tops of the pits, (one 6ft and the other 8ft. in diameter both about 7ft. deep) showed signs of occupation and a Saxon pot was found at the bottom of the second pit. The first pit contained some Iron Age - Romano British pottery in the fill which probably fell in from a surface deposit connected with the ditches of the Roman building site TM 22 NW 3. Nothing visible on RAF cover but air photographs taken in 1974 indicated extensive settlement. (1-3)
