More information : (TM 12151572) St. Osyth's Abbey (NR) Remains of (Augustinain) (NAT). (1) St Osyth's Priory was founded in 1121 and became an abbey about 1150. The abbey was suppressed in 1539 and came into the possession of Lord Darcy in 1553. He transformed the abbey into a house destroying some parts and making additions which left it much as described by Royal Commission (3). See Guide Book. (2-3) This former religious establishment, still known as St Osyth's Priory, would appear to have been an abbey at the suppression. The remains, still extensive, are as shown on plans. Descriptions in (3) are accurate. The chapel (13th century) is still used for religious purposes. (4)
