Hob Uid: 387592
Location :
Norfolk
Breckland
Great Ellingham
Grid Ref : TM0190097300
Summary : Inhumation cemetery, certainly Mediaeval, and possibly Saxon. Roman, Saxon and Mediaeval pottery were found during excavations in 1958, but, apart from a single inhumation which had a Roman coin in the skull, only the Mediaeval pottery was found directly associated with the inhumations.
More information : A female skeleton with the skull containing a Roman
coin c AD 270 was found among a group of inhumatins, during road
widening at Great Ellingham. Later excavations produced nearly
two dozen inhumations all associated with medieval sherds and
debris. A few pieces of Romano-British pottery were found on the
site, but not in association with any bones. The ? RB inhumation
is in Norwich Museum. Registration 241.957. (1)

Anglo Saxon sherds were also found on the site. The finds all came
from the area TM 020973 but the farmer gave evidence to suggest
that the burials extended to the cross roads at TM 019974 and south
along the E side of the by-road. (2)
