Evidence for Roman buildings around the church is as follow: In 1730 pavements were found in the churchyard and also under the Hall (see TM 01 SW 20). In 1740 a red tesselated pavement was found under the chancel and SE of the church. In 1764 remains of pavements were seen W of the church by Gough. A similar pavement was found in erecting a telegraph pole 40 feet SW of Yew Tree House in 1920. This was re-discovered in 1936 (See TM 01 SW 18). Small finds, some of which are in Colchester Museum, include coins of Faustina II and Postumus, bronze buckles, styli, Samian ware etc. (2-3)
A Roman wall, floor and associated depouts were observed at Coast Road, West Mersea (c. TM 00881248) in 1977 by members of the Colchester Archaeological Trust. (4)
