Summary : Ealdorman Aelfgar left a bequest to the monastic community at Stoke-by-Nayland (will dated 946-51). King Edgar granted land at Stoke, perhaps including the monastery, to Ely in 970. The whereabouts of the monastery is unknown, but may be on the site occupied by the 19th century Stoke Priory House, (TL93SE33). |
