Summary : Roman bronze figure of Mercury.
More information : [TL 9685 2265] Roman Bronze figure of Mercury found
A.D.1945. (1)

A fine bronze statuette of Mercury [see AO:60:120:6] 20 ins. high,
in excellent preservation was found about 1945 by Mr. Beales,
a ploughman employed on Gosbecks Farm.
"Owing to the great size of the field it has not been possible
to fix with any accuracy the exact findspot, which according to
the finder was in the bottom of the valley about 100 yards N.E.
of the N.E. corner of the temple portico. [TL 92 SE 90]. (2)

The statuette is a sophisticated version popular in the second
century of our era. There is no question of the work being
Greek, or, it appears, of its being a copy of any known famous
statue. Parallels are to be sought in the Celtic provinces of
the Roman Empire - in Germany at Trier, Cologne, etc. (3)

Bronze figure of Mercury. Presented to the Colchester Museum
by the Trustees of the Tomlinson Estate. (4)

No field action. (5)
