More information : [Name centred: [TL 8625 6466] St. Stephen's Hospital [G.T.] (Rems. of) [T.I.] (1) St. Stephen's Hospital, Bury St. Edmunds. The foundation date and the date of the dissolution are unknown. The hospital was a dependency of St. Edmunds Abbey It is not mentioned by Tanner or Kirby, but Gillingwater says that remains were in existence in his day. Slight fragments and re-used materials may still be seen in the vicinity. St. Stephen's hospital seems to have been situated on the N. of the road between Eastgate bridge and St. Nicholas; only a few pieces of old wall now remain. (2-5) There are no extant remains of this hospital. There is much re-used material, flint brick and stone, visible in walls of buildings etc. in the immediate area around the siting given by Authority 1. (6)
