Excavations directed by W Rodwell took place at the rear of No.21 Moulsham Street, which consisted of nearly one acre of orchard on a site where a coin (see authority 1) had been found in 1946. The site was to be partly destroyed by the inner relief road. Three Roman buildings were recorded. The first predated the Boudiccan revolt of A.D. 61, the second was of 1st-2nd century in date and the third was dateable to the third century. A series of 4th century drainage ditches and gullies were also excavated. The principal medieval feature was a road of 14th century date which had a uselife of no more than 100 years. A collection of medieval pottery was recovered. (2)
