More information : (TL 60719621) Site of Modney Benedictine priory now partly occupied by Modney Hall farmhouse. Part of plinths on N and W sides of farmhouse appear to be parts of monastic buildings; foundations are traceable in meadow to N. (1) Modney Benedictine priory cell, founded before 1291, dissolved ? 1536. (2) There are no surface structural remains of the priory. Modney Hall has an 18th/19th c brick cased exterior, but according to a former owner parts of the interior date to the 15thc. There is notrace or knowledge of the 'plinth' parts referred to. Two ponds on the N side of the Hall, shown on the OS 25" and now largely silted, may be original features, but it cannot be determined if c.4.0 - 5.0m wide boundary/drainage ditches on the S & E of the Hall form part of the priory limits. Earthworks in a field of permanent pasture centred at TL 6083 9633 comprise the truncated remains of steadings and a field system with a 'trackway' between them. The farmer states that masonry foundations lie near the surface over a large part of this field, but no structure outline is visible. Earthworks surveyed at 1/2500 on MSD. (3)
