Summary : In 1846, two railways, the Barrow and Dalton Railway (opened in June), and the Kirkby-in-Furness and Piel Railway (opened in August) combined to form the Furness Railway Company. This company, through a succession of takeovers eventually controlled the railways between Carnforth and Whitehaven. The main routes of the 1846 railways remain open, the only major differences today being remodelling of junctions. |
