Chignall Hall

Hob Uid: 376070
Location :
Essex
Chelmsford
Chignall
Grid Ref : TL6620010200
Summary : A 16th century house with an alleged moat, which is probably not an antiquity (probably actually gravel pits).
More information : (TL 662102) Chignall Hall (NR) (1)

Chignall Hall is mid 16th century timber-framed and plastered, with gable ends of the cross wings rebuilt and faced with brick. An interior inscription dates completion to 1552 and a post is dated 1686. Grade 2. A moat lies to the north. (2-3)

The house is as described above but has been modernised and is not outstanding. An irregular pond to the SW of the house is probably the result of gravel digging and does not form part of a moated enclosure. (Part of this pond has been destroyed by a modern house).
