Summary : The Augustinian Priory of St James was founded by Gilbert de Mountfitchet just before he left for the Holy Land or by his son, Richard, circa 1150. It was probably for 5-6 canons, and was dissolved in 1536. An almost rectangular enclosure with a small moated area in the south east corner, and a large fish pond, are all that remains of Thremhall Priory. No Priory buildings now exist, the site being occupied by a house of 18th century date. |

An almost rectangular enclosure with a small moated area in the south east corner, and a large fish pond, are all that remains of Thremhall Priory. No Priory buildings now exist, the site being occupied by a house of 18th C date with considerable additions; Grade 2.
Buried in flower bed is the 13th C bowl of a font now in poor condition. (3-4)
Font removed in 1938 by the then owner, Mr Pope. Traces of foundations visible on the lawn in front of the house (TL 5310214) in dry summer weather. (5)
No structural remains of the 12th C Priory but the moat and fishpond are as described, waterfilled and in good condition. The crop marks (5) were not located. (6)
Thremhall Priory (name confirmed on farm name board) is as described by authority 3.
The fishpond at TL 5302 2150 has been partially filled and now measures 70.0m long by 20.0m wide. No remains of the 12th C priory foundations were found in the lawn to the south of the house (now unoccupied) which is as described but not outstanding.
