MONUMENT NO. 371968

DESCRIPTION + /

A monastery was extant at Horningsea with a large community of clerics, and is the only documented minster in Cambridgeshire. The Victoria County History states that `...there was a minster of royal rank at Horningsea where a substantial community of clerks existed.' It goes on the say that the people gave this church 5 hides at Horningsea and 2 at Eye. It is clear that it was not only a minster, but also collegiate at the time of the Danish Conquest in 870.
