Summary : A Romano-Celtic bronze and silver hoard (now in the British Museum) was found when a chalk pit was dug in Rokey Wood, Barkway circa 1743. It consisted of a bronze figure of Mars and a bronze knife or mace handle, along with seven silver votive plates (three of them having inscriptions punched on them). Four of the plates bore the figure of Mars, two others carried the figure of Vulcan and the seventh (the largest of them) just bore an inscription.
More information : A Romano-Celtic bronze and silver hoard (now in the British Museum) was found when a chalk pit was dug in Rokey Wood, Barkway circa 1743 (the nearest chalk pit to Rokey Wood is at TL 376 363 and appears as "old chalk pit" on OS 1st ed 1:2500). It consisted of a bronze figure of Mars and a bronze knife or mace handle, along with seven silver votive plates (three of them having inscriptions punched on them). Four of the plates bore the figure of Mars, two others carried the figure of Vulcan and the seventh (the largest of them) just bore an inscription. (1-4)

No chalk pit can be seen in Rokey Wood, and the only pits in the vicinity of the wood are at TL 376 363 and TL 378 356. Nothing on Enclosure Map (1808). (5)

The statuette of Mars, and one of the votive plaques dedicated to Mars `Alator' are illustrated and considered by Henig. (6)
