More information : [TL 2072 2920] Roman Villa (R) (Site of) (NAT) (1)
In a field near Purwell Mill the plan of part of a Roman villa consisting of seven rooms was revealed by excavation in 1884. Three of the rooms were heated by hypocaust and were probably the bath suite. One room had a mosaic floor. Finds included, forty coins ranging from AD 193-392, a bronze steel yard, stylus, bones of wild and domestic animals, bone pins, oyster shells painted wall plaster and pieces of fine glass vessels, window glass and thick glass bottles. Squatters heaths were in evidence. (2)
Crop marks visible. ? Corridor Villa - TL 20722924. (3)
The site of this villa is now under high crop, the top level of which shows much irregularity. Not perambulated fully, but a narrow ploughed strip to the west produced Roman brick, roofing tile, pottery sherds and oyster shells. Topographically the site sits on a slight south-west facing slope sheltered from the prevailing wind. (4)
The site of the villa was covered by a cereal crop at the time of investigation. No finds were seen around the field edge. (5)
HT 75 Listed as the site of a Roman villa. (6)
Scattered remains in the ploughsoil to the north of the villa suggested further occupation.
Documentary evidence from the 19th century excavation gave no indication of the orientation of the villa. Aerial photographic evidence suggests there are further remains in the area of the villa, and the supposed location of the villa may be inaccurate. The remains may lie more tot he north than has been supposed.
It is recommended that the site be investigated further and arrangements made for a geophysical survey. (7) |
