The Gilbertine Priory cell at Hitchin was founded in 1361-2 was dissolved in 1538. (2)
The Biggin Almshouses, built in the 17th c., on the site of a religious house of which there are no visible remains consist of four wings built about a small courtyard. There have been many alterations at various times. (3)
Present building built or rebuilt as a residence by Robert Snagge c. 1585. A 14th c. window discovered in 1907 on S. side, apparently in situ, led to suggestions that remnants of the Priory were incorporated in the present structure, but this is apparently discounted by R.C.H.M. (qv. auth.4). Converted to almshouses c. 1812. (4)
The Biggin Almshouses, for 12 widows, are as described by R.C.H.M., except that the building is probably late 16th c: in good condition. GPs AO/62/69/1: Arcade in courtyard from N. AO/62/09/2: E. side from N.E. (5) History of the Priory, which was known as New Bigging Priory (6,7). It was founded by Sir Edward de Kendale for three canons of the Gilbertine Order, of whom one was to be prior. Biggin almshouses have been restored and coverted into flats (7).
The almshouses are of early 17th century date, partly rebuilt in more modern brickwork. Grade II*. (6-9) |
