Shouldham Priory

Hob Uid: 356025
Location :
Norfolk
King's Lynn and West Norfolk
Shouldham
Grid Ref : TF6800009400
Summary : Gilbertine priory founded circa 1190 and dissolved in 1538. The buried remains of this and associated features (including a tile kiln, cemeteries, fishponds, a field system and a Roman road) lie immediately to the north of Shouldham village. The upstanding ruins were demolished circa 1831. The centre area of the monument is now the site of a farmhouse and garden.
More information : (TF 68020951) Abbey Farm on site of (NAT) Priory of St Mary & Holy Cross (NR) (Gilbertine) (NAT) (TF 68000939) Moat (NR) (1)

Gilbertine Priory of Holy Cross and the BV. Mary. Founded after 1193, dissolved 1538. (2)

Site of abbey at S. of Abbey Farm in N. part of (Shouldham) village (TF 680 094). Two adjacent moats probably divided the canons quarters from those of the nuns. (3)

Ironwork and 13c. tile found in digging Abbey Farm foundations. (4)

Part of burial ground (TF 682 096) excavated. Remains of 22 individuals identified, rather more than half female. (5)

TF 68160980. A tile kiln probably 15th-16th century excavated 1969-70. Possibly associated with repairs and later reconstruction of the Priory, about 1400 and later. (6,7)

Nothing visible on air photographs. (8)

The modern Abbey Farm contains no fabric "in situ" relative to the Gilbertine Double House.
Earthworks to the south of the farm constitute early fields, roads, fishponds and drainage, all probably contemporary with the Priory but over-ridden in parts by later quarrying; the
published 'moat' cannot in fact be classified as such being an inherent part of the field complex. There are no structural remains of the tile kiln reported by auths 6 & 7 nor is kiln debris evident. The burial ground (authy 5 refers) is now under crop.
Earthworks revised/surveyed on 1:2500 AM. (9)

Scheduled listing. (11)
