Grid Ref : TF4638087850

More information : [TF 4639 8786] Moated site reported 1956 12-16th C.
(?) pottery. (1)

A hearth tile bearing the arms of the Angevin family was found
when some digging took place in the moated enclosure near
Theddlethorpe All Saints church. "The house within the moat was
called Keleshall (a). (2)

A Homestead moat; marshy with some standing water. No surface
finds were made. Surveyed at 1/2500. (3)

The Medieval moat described by the previous authorities was seen as
cropmarks and mapped from good quality air photographs. The moat
encloses a rectilinear area measuring 85m by 70m with another
enclosure attached to its south side. The moat is possibly
contemporary with a settlement visible to the north and east (see
TF 48 NE 5). (Morph No. LI.433.1.1).

This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database.
(4)

The moat was re-drawn from 1999 air photography as part of the 1999/2000 recce recording programme. The area enclosed by the moat is 83 m by 75 m. The small enclosure attached to the south side and described by authority 4 could not be seen and the features shown on the east side by the NMP plot appear to be enclosed by a ditch which springs from the north east corner of the moat. (5)

The moated site is located 100m to the north of the Old Vicarage. The site was identified in 1956.

The island is enclosed by a broad moat measuring 8m to 12m in width, with external banks to the north and east. Channels extend southwards from both the south east and south west corners of the moat to enclose a plot measuring 70m by 20m. A channel extending onto the island from the western moat arm may represent a subdivision of the island.

The moated site has been cultivated for a number of years. The moat arms and channels have been infilled and the moat is visible as a shallow depression in the ploughsoil set against the slightly raised rounded mound which represents the island.

Poor survuval means that the site does not fulfil the criteria for scheduling. (6)
