More information : There was a monastery at Partney during the 7th century. Its founder is not known but two of the abbots are mentioned by Bede. The abbey was probably destroyed by the Danes and never rebuilt. (1) An information board, of anonymous authorship, in Partney Church notes that the site of this monastery was "in the field behind the Post Office", centred at TF 412 683, and still known as Monks Field. There are faint amorphous earthworks in this field (now under pasture), but they form no definite pattern. (2)
