More information : [TF 31552482] Elloe Stone [GT] (site of). (1)

The Elloe Stone, which "formerly stood on waste land beside the... Old Spalding Gate" road [Name: TF 318249] and by 1889 had been removed to the hedge on the south side of the road, was mounted on a new base supplied by public subscription on June 22, 1911, the day of the coronation of King George V. The stone now measures 32 in. high and 16 1/2in by 10in at the base. It has traces of Saxon carving on the face and sides, and originally marked the site where men of Elloe Wapentake held their Hundred Court. (2-3)

Situated at TF 3155624824. See G.P AO/65/109/8. (4)

Elloe Stone. A Saxon stone about 3ft. high, now set on a base with an inscription recording that is was put there by public subscription at a recent date. It is the probable site of the Wapentake Court. (5)

TF 315248. Elloe Stone, Scheduled. (6)

This is one of the few cross-shafts in England which was used for a non-sepulchral purpose. The monument has marked the meeting place of the wapentake since at least the reign of Henry VII. The weathering on the stone, particularly on the south-west face, indicates that that it is either in situ, or very close to its original position. It is possible that the stone does mark the site of a burial or burials. Fully described. (7)
