More information : [TF 31321400] Aswick Grange MOAT [G.T.] (1)
Aswick Grange belonged to Crowland Abbey. Part of the medieval moat remains. Roman coins and pottery found in and near Aswick Grange are recorded by Stukeley in 1724, and, in 1753, he bought a number of coins, including some of Augustus Tiberius, Otho and Carausius, which had been found in a pot at Aswick. In 1961 W.S. White of Whaplode School reported Romano-British pottery from the area of the moat. The whole of this area is one of intensive Romano-British occupation, (see air photographs and TF 31 SW 3 and 12), and the reports of the earlier finds led to the medieval moat being erroneously published on O.S. 6" of 1906 as Roman Camp. The published moat remains have been filled in and are visible only as grass discolouration; published survey (25") revised. The house is completely modern. (6)
