More information : [Area: TF 2377 8612](3) The village of Grimblethorpe is separately assessed in the Subsidy Rolls. (1) There are indications of the deserted village [area: TF 2382 8672] on air photographs PE 60-64(2). [? St. Joseph]. R.A.F. cover shows earth-works over a larger area than that suggested by Baker. (1-3) The large area indicated on APs was perambulated but showed no steadings, only evidence of early agriculture, i.e. field roads, field banks and ditches. A few cottages survive at Grimblethorpe (others have been demolished within memory), close to the Hall which has internal features dating it to the early 17th c. It seems likely then, that the present small settlement is a contraction of the Md. Village and occupies the same site. (4) The area of earthworks has now been ploughed and is under winter crop. It is located on the NW side of a valley running to the SW. Only a limited perambulation was possible but it could be seen that no earthworks now survive and no occupation debris was visible. (5)
The village remains described by the previous authorities were seen as cropmarks and earthworks and mapped from good quality air photographs. The main settlement remains run in a fairly regular linear pattern, NE to SW from TF 2391 8708 to TF 2358 8630. A few field boundaries lie further to the east at TF 2404 8673, TF 2391 8648 and TF 2377 8617.
The main components of the village are bank-defined tofts and crofts, which line a series of hollow ways running NE-SW, centred at TF 2389 8696, TF 2390 8675 and TF 2381 8667. There are also remains of a field system of ridge and furrow, at the southern end of the village remains. (Morph No. LI.303.2.1 - 2.5)
