More information : Girsby, a lost hamlet of Burgh on Bain does not seem to have had a church. [Nothing seen on air photographs in the area of Girsby Manor but see TF 28 NW 15 for mediaeval enclosures which may be connected with this site.] (1) A likely site of this hamlet in the area of the manor has been perambulated but no surface indications of desertion were noted. The house itself is recent and half demolished. (2)
There is some evidence of Medieval settlement around Girsby Grange, which could represent the remains of Girsby hamlet, described by authority 1. The settlement remains were seen as earthworks and mapped from poor quality air photographs. They comprise a system of hollow ways, centred at TF 2143 8708 and TF 2119 8692. In amongst these hollow ways are five blocks of Medieval ridge and furrow centred at TF 2123 8714, ranging in length from 60m to 200m.
Also recorded to the south and east of one of the hollow ways are the remains of at least five tofts, about 20m wide, some defined by ditches others by banks. They are centred at TF 2145 8698 and TF 2148 8706. Other settlement remains further to the south, around Burgh on Bain are recorded in TF 28 NW 15. (Morph Nos. 301.5.1 - 5.3)
