Summary : 13th-16th century, and 19th century. Squared greenstone rubble, squared limestone rubble, red brick in English bond, some render, slate roofs. Western tower, nave and chancel. Also Medieval stone cross in the churchyard, of which all that remains is the base of the cross and part of the shaft. |
More information : [TF 24146469] St Margaret's Church [T.U.]. (1) St Margaret's, Roughton has Transitional to Perpendicular features. In the NW quoins of the nave is a section of a double-shafted corner, possibly Norman. (2-3) In the churchyard is the base and 13 inches of the shape of the cross.
The church is in normal use.

TF 2414 6468. Churchyard cross, St Margaret's churchyard. The cross is medieval in date and is constructed of limestone. The monument includes the base of the cross and part of the shaft.
The base takes the form of a socket stone, a single block of rectangular section which stands to a height of up to 0.23m above the ground surface. The sides of the stone taper towards the upper edge which is chamfered all the way round. Set into the top of the socket stone is the shaft fragment, 0.21m square in section at the base rising through moulded and chamfered corners in tapering octagonal section to a height of 0.34m. The top of the shaft fragment has been rounded off. Scheduled RSM no. 22676. (5) |
